Andy Curry

This isn't very good. I used to be afraid. Now things are better.

The Andy Curry band are a rock / country / blues / folk / pop / whatever band based in the north of England. They wield songs about gin, hot showers, bees, shotgun marriages, escaping from Manchester, vampires, lifeboats and being beaten up on a wet Thursday night. The culmination of an extended series of bets - The Andy Curry Band sees the eponymous songwriter turning his one-man acoustic songs into loud, noisy, distorted slices of rootsy joy.

The Band are: Andy Curry (guitars, vox), Alexander King (drums, vox), Jim Stafford (bass) and Andy Payne (keys, vox). There are often others.

The Andy Curry Band has previously supported the likes of King Creosote, James Yorkston, Gravenhurst and Jeremey Warmsley amongst many others.

Andy is also a member of THE MOOTED THEATRE CO. Come see him pretend to be other people.

Live on BBC Radio Humber

30th Sept, 2008 by Andy

On the 28th Sept The Andy Curry Band performed live and were interviewed on BBC Radio Humber's excellent Raw Talent show - performing B-Movie, How Far Can I Take You and Protégé.

The recordings are now up on our music player and on Myspace (where you can also download everything!) and if you wish to hear myself and Alexander talking incoherently over each other, then you can listen again at THIS LINK at about the 70 min point. Thanks to all at BBC Humber for having us down.

Think of all of this as a sneak peak of the forthcoming EP - FOR THE LOVE OF GODS - due to be released in early 2009. Exciting!

Payne joins band - Junction gig cancelled

9th April, 2008 by Andy

... the two aren't necessarily related.

But two points:

i.) The R.Hon Andy 'Umbro' Payne, who you may have seen in Dust Bowl Central all those years ago, has joined The Andy Curry Band, spanking his enormous keyboard in absolutely glorious style. Hopefully he'll be all warmed up and off the bench by the next gig.

ii.) Our next gig - Junction on 16th April - has unfortunately been postponed. But we have plenty more in the pipeline for your AC Band edification. More news when we get it.

The Andy Curry Band

10th March, 2008 by Andy

Alexander King and Jim Stafford Exciting news - I now have meself a band.

Imagine, if you will, the songs from my acoustic shows surgically transplanted onto electric guitars and shored up with some spectacular bass from Mr Jim Stafford (Dust Bowl Central) and powerful drums from Mr Alexander King (AKP).

And to my deeply biased ears it's sounding bloody lovely so far!

Our debut gig is Friday 21st March supporting The Jess Gardham Band in Fibbers, York.

Following that we're looking for anything and everything we can - if you fancy having us down at one of your nights / support your band / play at your Bar Mitzvah we would be honoured.

LIVE Session on BBC Radio - *Links now up*

Updated 6th March, 2008 by Andy

BBC Radio Humber are giving me an excuse to get out of the house, drive over to Hull and play some tunes. Like anyone really needs an excuse to do that. The show will be going out LIVE from 9pm on Sunday 2nd March.

UPDATE: Well, we went. We saw. We got totally lost in Hull. But eventually we managed to get there and had a great time. Here are some listen again links to the two tracks we did:

Ballad For A B-Movie Actor
How Far Can I Take You

Big thanks to Katy, Alan Raw and everyone else at BBC Humber.

WEALTH

18th February, 2008 by Andy

I recently completed work on a series of songs for the upcoming play by the Yorkshire-based theatre company Icabod Productions.

"Icabod bring their own inimitable style and energy to this rare comedy by Aristophanes. Newly adapted by Mark France, it wickedly satirises society’s obsession with money, status and consumption."

So if you like your socio-political theatre with a healthy dose of slapstick and scatological humour then I heartily recommend you get down to one of these shows!

2008 and the shape of things to come...

11th January, 2008 by Andy

Exciting prospects for 2008! Here's the skinny:

  • Some great new gigs booked including supports for the magnificent King Creosote in January and the lovely Jess Gardham band in March. See the Gigs page for more information.
  • I'll be recording a live session on YorkTV later this month - full broadcast date details will be reported as soon as I know myself and hopefully even a video.
  • ... and there's one more thing that I shall share at a later date - very exciting for me. It will basically guarantee that I have no free time at all in 2008.

So there we have it - plans and schemes are afoot! I hope to see you there!

New gig with Jess Gardham

9th October, 2007 by Andy

Jess is a superb performer, and a sight and sound to behold on her own, so with a full group behind her... this is going to be great! See the gigs page for more details.
